Microsoft recently released update 27.5 for Dynamics 365 Business Central, the latest monthly update for the 2025 release wave 2 cycle. At the same time, something else interesting happened: preview sandboxes for version 28 are now available.

That means two things for partners and developers:

  • First, production environments continue to receive incremental improvements through update 27.x.
  • Second, it is already possible to start preparing for the next major version of Business Central.

Let’s take a closer look.

Update 27.5 is now available

Update 27.5 is the latest service update in the Business Central 2025 release wave 2 lifecycle. These monthly updates typically include platform improvements, bug fixes, and smaller feature enhancements that build on the main release delivered earlier in the wave.

For SaaS environments, these updates are rolled out automatically by Microsoft according to the update schedule. As always, it is good practice to:

  • Validate your extensions against the new platform version

  • Test critical integrations

  • Keep an eye on telemetry and upgrade logs

Preview sandboxes for version 28

More interesting for many developers is the second announcement.

Microsoft has enabled the creation of preview sandboxes running Business Central version 28. These environments allow partners and developers to test upcoming features before the next release wave becomes generally available.

Preview environments are especially useful for:

  • Testing extension compatibility

  • Trying out new platform capabilities

  • Preparing customer upgrades

  • Updating training material and demos

You can create these preview sandboxes directly from the Business Central admin center.

Why preview sandboxes matter

If you build extensions or maintain solutions on top of Business Central, preview environments are extremely valuable.

They give you time to:

  • Identify breaking changes

  • Validate dependencies

  • Test AppSource apps

  • Adjust CI/CD pipelines

In other words, preview sandboxes help avoid surprises when the next major release arrives.

Final thoughts

Business Central continues its predictable monthly update cadence, with update 27.5 being the latest step in the 2025 release wave 2 cycle.

But the bigger signal is the availability of version 28 preview environments. If you build or maintain extensions, now is a good moment to spin up a sandbox and start testing.

Your future upgrade projects will thank you.
